TandemTab — the guide

TandemTab is a shared budget for couples and households. Everyone in the account sees the same numbers, and every expense syncs to the others the moment it's saved. It works just as well on your own.

This guide is short on purpose: one section per thing you can do. If you'd rather not read it, ask the assistant (Pro) — "how does the runway work?" — and it will answer.

1. Getting started

  1. Create your account, accept the terms, and you get a first budget account with a few starter categories (Food, Bills, Transport, Other) and the current month already open.
  2. Add your wallets — where your money actually is: a bank account, cash, a savings account. Give each one the balance it holds today.
  3. Add this month's income, so the app knows what you have to work with.
  4. Set a budget for the categories you want to keep an eye on.
  5. Log your first expense.

The Getting started card on Home ticks these off as you go, and disappears when you're done.

2. Home — am I OK this month?

3. Logging money

Add an expense with the + button: amount, category, wallet, and optionally the date and time, a note, a label and a trip. You can stage several and save them together. Pick a past date if you're catching up.

Add income from the same + (the Income tab): amount, source (salary, a gift…) and the wallet it went into.

Faster ways in:

Changing your mind: tap any row to edit it. Removing always asks first. On an expense you can also record money that came back (a refund, or a friend paying their share) and settle part of it onto another account.

5. Wallets — where the money is

Bringing in your bank's transactions:

6. Goals — saving up and paying off

7. Bills that repeat

Add rent, subscriptions and other regular bills once under Recurring, with the day they're due. Each month they come due on that day: confirm them, let them post automatically, or skip a month. A posted bill can be reverted if it was wrong.

8. Trips

Plan a trip with its dates and a budget, and every expense you log while away is filed to it — flights bought months earlier can be attached too. When you're back, the trip recap shows what it really cost. Trip Mode keeps logging working with no signal: expenses wait on your phone and post once you're back online.

9. The end of the month

When a month ends, TandemTab asks you to start the next one:

  1. Enter what each wallet really holds now — these become the new month's opening balances.
  2. Choose whether to copy this month's budgets, and whether to nudge each one toward what you actually spent.
  3. If a wallet doesn't match what was logged, it says so. A bank-connected wallet is checked against the bank too, and any bank transactions still waiting for review are listed first. You can log the difference as an adjustment, ignore it, or go back and add what's missing.

A finished month is closed for money, but you can still record a refund on it, and change an expense's category or label. The newest month can be removed if it was started by mistake (it asks first).

10. Sharing your budget

Invite a partner (or anyone you share costs with) by username: tap the account's name at the top, then Invite (it's on the Getting started card too). Everyone sees the same account, changes appear for all of you instantly, and each row shows who logged it. You can belong to several accounts — a household one and a personal one, say — and switch between them at the top.

11. The assistant

Ask about your money in plain words: "how much did I spend on food last month?", "which budgets are over?", "take me to my goals", "add 20 to groceries".
